Calling all New York State Same-Sex Couples!

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

I don’t usually use the blog for things like this, but I couldn’t find a link to this on the web, so I figured I’d create one with this post.  Leah and I hope to attend, and it would be wonderful to see a great turnout for this.

We have less than one month to make marriage equality a reality in New York State this year.

New York State Senator Thomas K. Duane, the sponsor of the marriage equality bill in the Senate, is calling on same-sex couples from across the State of New York to join him and his partner Louis Webre for a media event and rally in the New York State Capitol in Albany on June 1st.

Senator Duane wants  his Senate colleagues to stand witness to the commitment of same-sex couples who are denied the basic right of marriage simply because of who they love.

WHO:     Same-sex couples who live in New York State

WHAT:  The Capitol, Albany, New York

WHEN:  Monday, June 1st, 12 p.m.

Please RSVP to Eric Sumberg, Senator Duane’s Director of Communications at 212-633-8052 or eric (AT) tomduane.com if you plan to attend and for further details.

Whether you went to another jurisdiction to have a legal marriage, held a commitment ceremony, or are waiting to formalize your commitment until marriage is legal in New York State,  please join us.

Please pass this message on to every committed couple you know.

We have never been closer to marriage equality in New York State than we are right now.  You and your partner’s love and commitment will help make marriage a reality.

Favorite Site: So You’re EnGAYgaged

Wednesday, May 13th, 2009

With this Ring ...Marriage Equality has wonderful momentum so far in 2009, with Maine now added to the list and New Hampshire a distinct possibility. Here in New York, the fight is brewing in the State Senate, after the marriage equality bill passed in the Assembly by a large margin yesterday. Finally having legal recognition means that more and more same-sex couples are heading down the aisle, and more resources are becoming available to help couples planning their big day.

One of my favorite sites is the relatively new blog, So You’re EnGAYged. As the name suggests, it is an “online resource for same-sex and allied couples.” Kelly and Lara started the site to provide specifically queer-friendly resources, and individually vet each vendor that they list to ensure that the sites listed are all LGBT friendly. Having recently submitted my site/services for consideration, I can confirm that they really do a thorough check of the businesses with whom they affiliate, including asking about LGBT activism and community involvement.  Finding vendors friendly to gay, lesbian, bi and transgender folk can be a challenge, and sites like So You’re EnGAYged make the process that much easier, safer, and more comfortable.

Of course, in the end, a wedding is a wedding, so whether you’re a same-sex couple or not, there are plenty of great ideas to peruse for your celebration, and you can support vendors who support marriage equality.  I’ve added So You’re EnGAYgaged to my blogroll, so you can easily find it at any time in the navigation bar on the right.

And for all the New Yorkers out there, contact your State Senator and tell them that you support marriage equality for all New York State residents.  To contact your Senator, visit http://www.nysenate.gov/senators
