FAQ: What am I supposed to do with these VR panoramas?

Sunday, September 30th, 2007

VR (Virtual Reality) is loads on fun, but only if you know what to do with it. I have a video tutorial posted on my website explaining how to view and navigate the panoramas posted here and on my websites. Click on the image to view it in flash (text only), or Download the full tutorial with narrated video.

Chasing Rainbows

Sunday, September 30th, 2007

Rainbow near Sherburne, NYThere is little as magical as stumbling upon a vivid rainbow, and I have spent a few afternoons chasing them in hopes of getting the perfect photo. Nearly a year ago, a magnificent double rainbow trailed us most of the way home to Oneonta on a drive from Syracuse. (There’s a VR panorama over at Learning to Fly Originals if you want to see that one. Scroll down the page; it’s near the bottom.) I was in Syracuse this past Wednesday, and rain came through the area that afternoon. The light at this time of year is wonderful, with the lower angle of the sun and the earlier sunsets bringing the “golden hour” earlier into the day when I’m more likely to be out and about. It was perfect rainbow weather. My route takes me into the town of Sherburne, where I make a turn at the intersection of routes 12 and 80. As soon as I made the turn, I saw the sky before me filled with color. This image was taken somewhere down the road, outside of the town buildings.

Moments like this leave me in awe of the world in which we live.

International Day of Peace

Friday, September 21st, 2007

Handmade Pinwheels for PeaceToday is International Day of Peace. It is also the weekend of the autumnal equinox, which means it’s time for another World Wide Panorama shoot. I decided to combine the two occasions, and organized a last minute installation of Pinwheels For Peace here in Oneonta. Pinwheels for Peace, now in its third year, was created by two art teachers to help their students “express their feelings about what’s going on in the world and in their lives.” I shared the idea of a local installation with some of the religious education teachers at our church, the Unitarian Universalist Society of Oneonta, since it was a perfect fit for UUs, and they provided the materials for the RE kids to make their own pinwheels last Sunday. I added a dozUUSO Pinwheels for Peace installationen pinwheels I created myself using my photographs, and set up the installation this afternoon in the UUSO Peace Garden. This was a temporary installation, and after shooting my panoramas and some additional images, I removed all of the pinwheels so the kids can plant them a second time during their classes on Sunday. As much as I enjoyed making the pinwheels and doing the shoot, I look forward to Sunday when they will be on public display, in the true spirit of the event.

Once the panorama is ready, I’ll post a link here.
