The birds in the carport left us while we were away this weekend, but this morning we received the anticipated news of a new arrival to the family: Our nephew, Robert Fitzpatrick Ingram. No photos yet, but mom and baby are doing well. Congratulations to Elena and Patrick!

The World Wide Panorama: “Community” Event

Wednesday, July 4th, 2007

The latest World Wide Panorama event, “Community” is now up for public viewing. For those unfamiliar with the WWP, it is a coordinated world-wide Virtual Reality photo shoot. Photographers from all over the world create VR movies during a set period of time around the four annual solstices and equinoxes, with a theme for each event. For the 2007 summer solstice, the theme was Community. I have been participating in the WWP for several years now, and this is the eighth event in which I have participated. I chose to do my shoot at the Oneonta Farmer’s Market, held every Saturday during the summer. In addition to local produce vendors, the market draws artisans, community organizations, activities for children and live music. One of the things we love about living here is the people and the community, and this little market exemplifies that.

To see (and hear) the farmer’s market, click on the image. (The rest of my WWP contributions are easily accessible by just clicking on my photo or name once you are there.) Make sure to click on “Open Fullscreen” to get the full effect.

Be sure to browse through the hundreds of others contributions while you’re there. Even I have trouble looking through all of them, but the breadth and quality of the submissions never ceases to amaze me. I’m proud to be part of such of vibrant and talented community of artists.

There’s a family living in my carport …

Baby robins eagerly await a feedingBirds like to build nests on top of the extension ladder I have hanging in our carport. As this renders the ladder unusable, I try to remove them as soon as possible, but I apparently missed one. When I saw the robin sitting on the new nest last week, I realized that it would need to be left in place for a while. When we returned from Buffalo yesterday, I noticed something furry moving about in the nest. Lo and behold, the eggs had hatched, and we now have a family of robins living in the carport. I watched them through the bathroom window with my camera, and was witness to several feeding sessions. I’ve never seen the little birds eating before, at least not in person, so it was a treat.

Training the next generation of photographers

Tuesday, July 3rd, 2007

The young photographer at workWe went out to the Buffalo area to visit family and attend my niece Megan’s 2nd birthday party this weekend. We were able to spend lots of time playing with the girls, which meant hundreds of photos. Molly, who is just a few months shy of age 4, has been shooting with me since before her third birthday. She would sit in my lap looking at the images on my Nikon D70 LCD screen, and quickly learned how to press the shutter button while I held the camera. By the next visit, she was framing images through the viewfinder, checking the LCD to see the results, and if they were askew or otherwise undesirable, would proclaim, “No good,” and try again. Now that I have the D200, she will hold the D70 herself and giving the burst speed a run for its money.

We went to the Clarence Day in the Park with our two nieces, and my brother and SIL on Saturday, and that evening, Molly got to stay up way past her bedtime to see the fireworks. While we were waiting for the pyrotechnics, Molly and I shot a panorama. Using the handy IR remote on the D70, Molly shot most of the images herself. I took the rest and stitched it together, and you can see the results in the big panorama gallery at Learning to Fly Originals: SMALL | FULLSCREENFireworks at Clarence Day in the Park

She then took over the D200 I’d mounted on the tripod, which was at the perfect height, and started taking portraits of all of us. The girl is a natural.

Incidentally, while this is Molly’s first time shooting a QTVR, it’s not her first time modeling for one. The honor for that shoot goes to my father, Frank Pecenco, who created a cylindrical panorama using a homemade panorama head way back in 2004, just after I’d started shooting them myself. Molly was all of 11 months when she modeled for this one with her grandparents. I’ve cleaned it up a bit and put it online: SMALL| FULLSCREEN
