A Winter Wonderland, at Last

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

Despite all the snow that has fallen south of us this year, we’ve actually had very little here in Upstate New York. After a strom brought a couple of inches Tuesday night, a bigger storm started up yesterday afternoon and brought us our first significant snowfall of the season. I’ve been doing a Project 365/Photo of the Day project since the New Year, and decided to shoot a 360 VR as today’s image.

The Project 365 has been a personal project for me this year. The idea is to take and post one photo a day, every day, for one year. If you’d like to see what I’ve done so far and follow along, I have the images posted on my Flickr stream: http://www.flickr.com/photos/pecenco/sets/72157623006915725/.

A Grand Installation: The Rev. Craig Schwalenberg

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

Rev. Craig Schwalenberg gives the BenedictionThe Unitarian Universalist Society of Oneonta recently called a new minister, the Rev. Craig Schwalenberg. He’s been hard at work since August, but his formal installation was held this past Sunday, and he asked me to photograph the event.

Numerous UU and other local clergy and dignitaries attended and participated in the service, including Oneonta Mayor John Nader, Rev. Teressa Sivers of Oneonta’s First United Methodist Church and Rev. Judy Thistle, Chaplain at A.O. Fox Hospital.

More photos from the event are availble in several locations online.

The highlights, captioned and tagged to the best of my ability, are on Facebook. If you are friends with anyone I didn’t tag, please tag them.

A Night at the Ballpark

Tuesday, September 8th, 2009

He's out! With the Labor Day weekend behind us, and kids headed back to school, the official end of summer is upon us, even as the weather has finally settled into a delightful pattern of warm and sunny days. In the waning days of summer, Leah and I, along with our friend Deb and hundreds of other SUNY Oneonta employees, spent an evening at Oneonta’s Damaschke Field, home to the NY-Penn League Oneonta Tigers. The Tigers were playing the Brooklyn Cyclones that evening, and racked up another loss that contributed to their late-season slide out of the playoffs.

All in all, however, the score was close at 4-3, and we all enjoyed one of the traditional rites of summer, a night at the ballpark

Robin and Toni: A Beautiful Belly Session

Tuesday, August 11th, 2009
Robin and Toni's Belly Session

Earlier this summer, I had the pleasure of photographing Robin and Toni, just two weeks before Robin gave birth to their adorable baby boy. With a lovely summer afternoon available to us, we did the shoot on the banks of the Susquehanna River here in Oneonta.

Toni shares a special moment with his son

They were an amazing couple to photograph, and the emotions they shared for me to capture ran the gamut from playful to passionate to profoundly touching. Even better, it was great fun to work with them on this shoot.

Congratulations to Robin and Toni on the arrival of their son!

Having a little funRobin & Toni

How Not to Wake Up: Nature’s Alarm Clock

Yellow-Bellied SapsuckerEach morning for over a week, we’ve awoken (far too early, I might add) to a hammering sound coming from somewhere outside. On the first day, I assumed that someone in the neighborhood was doing some sort of construction work. The sound continued every subsequent morning, however, and Leah determined that it was far too rhythmic to be human in origin. Sure enough, yesterday morning she spotted the source. A woodpecker has decided that the metal shielding on the utility pole in front of our house is the perfect place to sound its daily rat-a-tat-tat. I took out the camera and got a few shots of it throughout the morning.

It’s a beautiful bird, but a terrible ruckus.

Update: My Clarence classmate Greg Coniglio, an avid birder and wonderful bird photographer, identified it as a yellow-bellowed sapsucker. Thanks, Greg! Even better, he says they are “passing through” at this time of year, so we may get some sleep yet. See Greg’s photos at his blog, aptly titled “Greg’s Blog
